This is mostly here for notes on things I'm working on, or playing with, if there's a difference. As a Systems Administrator I don't experiment with new hardware much; I tend to conservatively stick with Dell systems, only occasionally custom-building a test system or two. Or three, or four. But there are a lot of new experiments in software, particularly with the organization-specific enterprise software that the others may not use. If you're more interested in hardware experimentation, or individual computer experiences, I suggest you check out the Daynotes Gang, and see where it leads.
Most of the events described here take place at my work, a fairly new company called iTOOL.com. We are a rather specialized web-hosting company; iTOOL is the first hosting company that allows you to create, edit, and maintain your web page, email, and server status from your browser, without using any of the more usual HTML editors or the need for FTPing updates to the site. Anyway, I hope you have as much fun reading the site as I do making it. Jump to newest update at 10:30 AM Wednesay, MST |

9:50 Lots of cleanup chores, on the site and in the office, so this will be a short update. I moved all of last year's entries into a "1999" folder, so update your bookmarks, should there be any, accordingly. The link to the "persistent date" version of this page, stored on the Index Page, is broken until such time as I get my update-scripts straightened out. No Y2K problems here, unless you count my hangover on the 1st, and, well, I think that was a pretty common one. I spent a valuable amount of time on Friday in the office, making some last minute checks and tests, and a lot of "reassure the customers" question-and-answer sessions. All of which really has me in the mood for some BOFH stories, so it's with a glad heart that I hear he will be reappearin on the World Wibe Web at The Register. I'm already saving for the T-shirt. <G> 9:30 AM Spent last night doing some major upgrades to the iTOOL system. THAT was interesting. Ever see the Peanuts cartoon where Charlie Brown has lost another baseball game, and as he walks away he says "Fo one brief shining moment, victory was in our grasp..." at which time, Lucy walks by and says "Yeah, and then the game started." Well, that's how this upgrade went. For one brief shining moment, everything worked as advertised, and then the upgrade started. What a mess. Needless to say, I got out of here around 9:30 or so. Joy. I did spend some time yesterday away from Windows-land, playing with my Mandrake box. I have to say, you can tell 7.0 is still in beta, but it will be really cool when they finish it. My cohort in crime was installing it on his machine, and after failing to get the video card to work, he decided to switch cards. When he rebooted the machine, Mandrake detected the change in hardware configuration and automatically changed the configuration to match. Wow. Very nice. I've also been playing with the various "default security settings"; Mandrake is the first linux distrobution I've seen that selects what kind of security to put on the box. I'm adding SSH and a few other goodies so I can play with the machine from home, but the default security options are nothing to sneer at. If I didn't need the remote access capability, I could set the "High" security option and be perfectly comfortable with it. Looks like another busy day ahead... what am I saying. They're all busy days. Later. 10:30 AM The harder I paddle, the quicker the stream. Sigh. Tomorrow is M-day, Move Day. For those who're just joining us... Where've you been? Sorry. Medication's not kicking in yet, and Wierd Al is in the cupholder. Why? Because it's part of the sysadmin mystique, that's why. Anyway, Move Day is the day when my lovely wife and I move from our current abode to a sparkling new apartment. Woohoo! I get to carry heavy boxes and furniture to a new second-floor apartment! Yes! I'm also starting a new project... remember when I was working on playing with Exchange 2000, and recommending that iTOOL start using it internally? (No, not intravenously, silly!) Well, now I actually get to implement that decision. What fun. I have in front of me a single sheet of paper listing all of our objectives. The problem with this is that the paper is a graphical representation of a relational database. I hate developers. <G> This is going to use every capability of Exchange, or pretty close. Guess I better get started. |
