MUSINGS FOR THE WEEK

This is mostly here for notes on things I'm working on, or playing with, if there's a difference. As a Systems Administrator I don't experiment with new hardware much; I tend to conservatively stick with Dell systems, only occasionally custom-building a test system or two. Or three, or four. But there are a lot of new experiments in software, particularly with the organization-specific enterprise software that the others may not use. If you're more interested in hardware experimentation, or individual computer experiences, I suggest you check out the Daynotes Gang, and see where it leads.

Most of the events described here take place at my work, a fairly new company called iTOOL.com. We are a rather specialized web-hosting company; iTOOL is the first hosting company that allows you to create, edit, and maintain your web page, email, and server status from your browser, without using any of the more usual HTML editors or the need for FTPing updates to the site.

Anyway, I hope you have as much fun reading the site as I do making it.

Monday

Today was spent having a lot of fun. Details Tuesday.

Tuesday

8:00 AM Ding Dong, the bastard's gone, the bastard's gone, the bastard's gone, ding dong the bastard's gone hooray...

Those of you who know me know EXACTLY what I'm talking about; for those who don't, it's not complicated. Our fearless, tireless network administrator has finally been convinced to go and seek greener pastures. Why is this a good thing if he was tireless? Well, the reason he was tireless is that he never did any work. Which in and of itself would only be a real problem for my boss, except that he continually tried to take credit for the work that my fellow admin and I did, while blaming problems on us as well. To hear him tell it, he was God's gift to the computing industry. Which doesn't explain why he couldn't tell me which machine was which in the server room without the labels, and even when he did figure them out he still didn't know what they did. Ah, well. He's finally gone, and I'm happy.

Been doing more work with Windows 2000. I have a few test Compaq servers for development purposes, and they're now set up in a four-machine Windows 2000 network. The new "tree/forest" directory structure takes some getting used to, but I'm seeing some advantages to it, especially in Internet-based systems. Is it better than NetWare? I don't know; I've used Novell, but not nearly as much as NT and Unix. I do think it's easier to use, but that doesn't always equal better. We'll have to see how it goes.

Wednesday

Don't ask. You didn't want to know anyway.

Thursday

5:00 PM More playing with Windows 2000 Active Directory, specifically with the new DNS-based domain structures. Interesting, I must say. I hated it with a passion until about 3:00 this afternoon, when I finally got it working the way it was supposed to work - and now I like it. It will take some getting used to, but there are a lot of advantages to the structures you can create this way. And it does it fairly easily, through the Dynamic DNS system. Well, once you configure it right. Do NOT assume that you can get it running just because you know DNS pretty well. It won't work.

Life continues on other tasks. Amazingly, the loss of our netadmin hasn't increased my workload at all. Imagine that. One might almost think he didn't do anything... oh, wait... I think I've come across something...
