November 22, 2008 Lillian. Nice name, that. (She was born December 1, 2006.)

  Calvin & Hobbes
This was originally planned as my major 2002/2003 Winter Build project, and assuming funding arrives, it probably still will be - or, at least, 2003 Spring Build project. <grin>

The Calvin & Hobbes is a large, powerful, two-stage cluster rocket. Measuring 7.67" in diameter and 12 feet in length, each stage of the rocket has a 54mm main motor mount with 4 38mm motor mount outboards.

Simulated max altitude with a full motor load? Well, that's 2 Cesaroni Pro54 K570-* motors and 8 Pro38 J285-* motors for a total impulse in the full M to baby N range. (Which means I'd need to get my Level 3 to make that flight.) That simulates out to a sustainer apogee of over 24,000 feet.

Now granted, there are a lot of estimates and assumptions in that simulation. One, the rocket mass (empty) is estimated at 12 lbs. I think I can do that, since I don't buy into the theory that anything "that big" has to be fiberglassed. (Nature and Properties of Materials classes, boys and girls. It might make a smoother finish, and it might seem like a necessity, but it's really not.)

Normal flights would be much lower, of course. Two K570-* motors will only take it to about 7000 feet. And, of course, with a liftoff mass of 12 pounds empty, you can use much smaller motors for sport flights, although I have smaller rockets to do that with.

No pictures yet, I promise there will be some of the build and the first flight as soon as possible.

  Design & Construction
The Calvin & Hobbes is designed to make use of Giant Leap Rocketry airframes, bulkheads and centering rings, and nose cones. The fins will be composites, G10 fiberglass cores laminated with plywood. They're large enough to require careful shaping and airfoils, which the wood will help with, while the fiberglass should provide the necessary strength without compromising flexibility.

The paint job? Well, the sustainer is Calvin, so that'll obviously be red with black horizontal stripes. The booster is Hobbes, so that will be orange with horizontal stripes. (The colors will be selected to be as complimentary as possible, and if you're wondering how red and orange can be complimentary I suggest you remember that this is not about looks. <G>) Each will have a decal of the chosen character - taken from one of the comics of Hobbes tackling Calvin as he arrives home from school, of course.

And Keri about has me convinced that the main parachute should be bright red with Spaceman Spiff in the middle...
